Por vs para
English says “for”. Spanish asks what you mean.
The short answer
Para often points to a purpose, intended recipient, destination, or deadline. Por often gives a cause, a route, a means, or an exchange. Both can translate as “for”, so choose according to the relationship in the sentence.
por
The reason or the way
Why something happens, the route taken, or what is exchanged.
Gracias por tu ayuda.
Thank you for your help.
para
The intended end
What something is for, who should receive it, or when it is needed.
Este regalo es para ti.
This gift is for you.
A cause explains why. A purpose gives the aim.
Picture a cancelled picnic and a Spanish study session. Rain explains why the picnic cannot happen. Understanding your friends is the aim of studying. When English uses “for” or “because of”, pause and decide which relationship you mean before choosing a preposition.
Cancelamos el picnic por la lluvia.
We cancelled the picnic because of the rain.
Por introduces the cause of the cancellation.
Estudio español para entender a mis amigos.
I study Spanish to understand my friends.
Para plus an infinitive expresses an aim.
Passing through somewhere or heading towards it
The same place can be part of your route or the destination you have in mind. Por can describe movement through an area. Para can indicate direction or destination. You will also hear a with destinations, as in Voy a Madrid; para is not the only way to express where you are going.
Caminamos por el centro.
We walk through the city centre.
The centre is the area you move through.
Este tren sale para Madrid.
This train leaves for Madrid.
Madrid is the intended destination.
A price and a deadline need different patterns
Learn a few concrete combinations you can reuse: pagar por something, a gift para someone, and work needed para a particular day. In a deadline context, para el viernes sets the target day for completion; it does not describe how long the work takes.
Pagué veinte euros por el libro.
I paid twenty euros for the book.
Por marks what you receive in exchange for the money.
Necesito el informe para el viernes.
I need the report by Friday.
Para introduces the deadline.
