Introduce yourself in Spanish

The short answer

Start with Hola, me llamo… to give your name. Ask ¿Cómo te llamas? for the other person’s name. Soy de… gives your origin, while Vivo en… says where you live. The conversation below uses informal tú between two new classmates.

Give a name and return the question

Learn me llamo and te llamas together. They describe different people in the exchange. ¿Y tú? is a short way to return a question when its meaning is already clear.

Me llamo Deniz.

My name is Deniz.

Change only the name to introduce yourself.

¿Cómo te llamas?

What’s your name?

This uses informal singular tú. It is not the usted form.

Separate origin from where you live

A person can come from one country and live in another. Use de with soy for origin and en with vivo for residence. You can connect the two with pero when you want to show a contrast.

Soy de Turquía.

I’m from Turkey.

De introduces the place of origin.

Vivo en Dublín.

I live in Dublin.

Vivo en tells the listener where you live now.
